Friday through Sunday, April 13-15, 2012
Friday, 6:30-9:30pm
Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm
Sunday 10:00am-5:00pm
DESCRIPTION:
Through a fun, fast-paced combination of lecture/slideshow, cutting and setting demos, and lots of hands-on practice, students will learn to confidently execute two "extreme sport" variations of ungrouted glass-on-glass mosaic:
Flat Stacking, in which differing opacities of stained glass are adhered in layers to a mirror substrate. This technique explores the luminous light diffusion, color blending, and unique three-dimensional background / foreground effects only layers can produce.
Edge Stacking, in which stained glass strips of varying heights and lengths are stacked on edge to showcase the light-handling properties of the riven edge. This technique creates dramatic dimensional contrasts with surrounding elements.
Other techniques and topics covered:
+ The benefits of combining glass with contrasting materials. Students will learn to cut and set an unglazed porcelain background to complement their
stacked glass mosaic elements.
+ Efficient cutting and setting tips for both glass and porcelain.
+ An introduction to UV-curing adhesives.
+ Using mirror as a substrate.
+ Framing
+ Appropriate adhesives, grouts, tools, and applications.
This workshop will be of greatest benefit to artists who have worked in glass but are looking for ways to push the envelope in how glass can be used in mosaics. Basic knowledge of glass cutting and mosaic principles techniques are required. Participants will complete up to two 6" x 6" glass mosaics in class, and will have the opportunity to incorporate most of the techniques and materials demonstrated. You will have a great time, work hard, and come away with brains packed full of new information and inspiration.
All supplies /materials will be provided. However, participants should plan to bring their own tools.
